Worm Castings - Nature's Perfect Plant Food

Worm Castings
Worm Castings are nature's most perfect plant food!  Also known as vermicompost or "worm poop," castings are an organic fertilizer and natural pesticide that will never burn your plants.  In addition to containing unusually high populations of beneficial microorganisms crucial to healthy root systems, castings also naturally aerate the soil, retain high moisture levels, and release nutrients slowly over time to meet your plants needs.

Benefits
More and more people are coming to realize that worm castings create healthier plants.  It helps extend root systems, increases nutrient retention, and aids in the fight of diseases and pests.  Some of the key benefits of using worm castings as organic fertilizer:

  • Will not burn, at any concentration
  • Improved soil structure, resulting in enhanced water retention
  • Rich in nutrients and trace minerals
  • Contain plant hormones that promote growth

Worm Casting Properties
Worm castings are rich in microbial life, helping to break down nutrients and aid plant absorption (for more information, see The Soil Food Web).  It is also packed with minerals that are essential for plant growth.  When compared with soil, worm castings contain:

  • 5 times more nitrogen
  • 7 times more phosphorus
  • 1.5 times more calcium
  • 11 times more potassium
  • 3 times more exchangeable magnesium

Additionally, worm castings contain worm mucus which keeps nutrients from washing away with the first watering and castings hold moisture better than plain soil.

Note:
Aerated worm tea is the one of the most effective uses of worm castings!
